West Essex DA – Hot Weather & Camping Safety Notice

Dear Members,

With the recent spell of hot, dry weather, we would like to remind everyone to take extra care when camping on fields and open grassland. Essex Fire & Rescue Service has highlighted the increased risk of grass and field fires during these conditions, as fires can spread extremely quickly from even a small spark.

Please note that Camping and Caravanning Club does not permit open fires at any time on our rallies or meets. We ask all members to respect this rule and remain vigilant during the current warm weather.

• As a club we are asking members not to use solid fuel barbecues or disposable BBQ’s during this very long dry spell.

Please help keep everyone safe by following these precautions:

• Gas BBQs, camping stoves and Cadac’s in accordance with site rules and on a stable, non-combustible surface when using on a table or if on legs dampen the grass with water before use, are acceptable if there is a bucket of water nearby.

• Keep cooking equipment well away from dry grass, tents, awnings, vehicles, and gas cylinders.

• Never leave stoves unattended while in use.

• Keep water nearby in case of an emergency.

• Dispose of cigarettes and matches safely and never throw them onto the ground.

• Never leave glass open to the sunlight.

Essex Fire & Rescue recently attended a grassland fire that was started by a camping barbecue igniting dry, cut grass, demonstrating how quickly incidents can develop in hot and windy conditions.

If you discover a fire, move to a place of safety and call 999 immediately, providing the exact location if possible.
